How to Prepare for Your Roof Repair

May 14, 2024

While roofs can generally last for 25 years or more, they need to be cared for. According to Bob Vila, you should schedule professional roofing inspections and maintenance at least once a year. What if the roofers need to do repair work? Here’s how you can prepare.

Park Your Vehicles Away From Your House

While the roofers are going to do everything possible to keep your home safe from damage, you want to keep your vehicles away. This is so that they can put a large dumpster in the yard and also keep you from worrying about anything falling and hitting your vehicle.

Prepare the Inside of Your House

While the contractors will be doing their work outside on the roof, they are going to be creating a lot of vibrations that reverberate throughout the house. You can take down pictures and remove vases from shelves. That way, there won't be anything damaged inside, either.

Protect Your Kids and Pets

While there are times that your children and pets need sunshine and fresh air, this isn't the time. Things will fall from the roof and the roofers may also have dangerous equipment outside. Keep your kids and pets inside and only let them out in an area where the roofers aren't working for a short time. For example, if your dog needs to go to the bathroom let them out but make sure you keep them under close observation and communicate with the roofers, too.

Take Care of Additional Elements

There are several other things that you can do, such as clear your patio of any furniture or appliances. You can also have any nearby trees pruned so that there are no branches on the roof. Take the time to cover up items in your attic and maybe even have a satellite dish company remove the dish while you have the roof work done.

If you do all the above, you're going to ensure that the roof repair process goes smoothly. Also, be sure to talk with the contractors about anything else that you might need to do. Then, it's a matter of watching them do their work and enjoying the results of a repaired roof.
